The Rugby chiefs are madly beating up on themselves trying to work out why rugby’s popularity has dropped off. They are busy blaming the lack of success in the world cup and so on. But to me a Rugby loving member of the New Zealand public the reason I have lost interest in Rugby has nothing to do with a loss or two in a one of Tournament, it is simply because I can’t watch Rugby on TV so I don’t follow it.
Since the Rugby union gave television rights to Sky the only way I can see any rugby on TV is by purchasing the “Rugby Channel”.
We live in the country so can only get to occasional regional matches and I just will not be blackmailed by Sky TV to have to subscribe to their “plan” so I can see rugby. They have cunningly packaged it so you have to commit to a platinum package extra to the required package making a total of $73.00 just to get Ruby. And its full of adds. Jeeze you pay for watching the national game and adds.
Sorry Sky Not Me! Rugby Union you sold the rights to Sky so you now wonder why you are loosing my interest!
I can watch league on TV for free. Netball has become very popular because it is beamed to the masses in prime time like Rugby used to .
NZRU you need to wake up and look for the real reasons people are loosing interest in Rugby. It was your decision made several years back. It did not show itself for a while because we could all watch delayed coverage but now that that has gone so have the fans!
